  • Wellness Center

    September 15, 2019

We’ve been doing a little “listening campaign” in wellness to understand what adolescents most need from parents and the other adults in their lives. We didn’t expect the answers to be so similar and resounding. In a word, they want the thing we all want, active listening.

The features of active listening include: open curiosity; non-judgment; feedback to reflect understanding; questioning whether the speaker would like advice. We all know how it feels when the person we’re speaking with is waiting their turn to speak instead of really listening. We’re a bit less aware when we’re the ones listening without curiosity and when we’re directing the conversation toward our own agenda.

Try a little exercise with a friend of family member where you each take two minutes to answer a prompt (try “what’s in your heart?” or “what’s really been on your mind lately?”) No interruptions, no feedback. See how it feels and you’ll have a great sense for how you can immediately improve how you’re supporting your teen.

LPIE still needs volunteers to staff the ticket booth at the Lafayette Art, Wine & Music Festival on Sept. 21 & 22. It’s a fun experience … and LPIE is the largest beneficiary, receiving $10,000 from the event last year which in turn benefited our schools. The Chamber counts on our volunteer support. Take a shift and enjoy the festival before or after!

  • Co-Presidents’ Message

    September 4, 2019

We hope the first few weeks of school have gone well for your students and they have adjusted back to the school calendar schedule. Most students (and parents) are likely looking forward to the long Labor Day weekend!

Parent feedback from Back to School Night was tremendously positive. The classroom visits with teachers are always a highlight and we appreciate the shout-out many teachers gave to Acalanes Parents Club and LPIE for our support. We are always looking for ways to improve upon BTSN and the parent meetings that follow the classroom visits.  Please reach out to us if you have any input you’d like to share.

Thank you Acalanes parents for helping APC meet its 2019-20 Fundraising Campaign goal! We could not provide the services and programs that we do without your support. A special thank you to our VP of Fundraising Veronique Kuhner for overseeing our fundraising.

We hope you’ll consider joining us at the upcoming APC Volunteer Campus Clean-Up Work Party on Sunday, September 14. We are excited about some clean-up projects that we hope will be completed that day if we can rally enough volunteers.

    Enjoy the long weekend!
